2011 Maui Paradise Marathon Rescheduled

Updated December 8, 2010

ALOHA!! The Maui Paradise Marathon and Half Marathon are back! A number of runners emailed asking that a marathon and half marathon be held on Sunday, January 16, 2011, and we listened. However, these are going to be a bit different from your typical destination marathons and half marathons. Here are some of the key items with fleshing out to be done over the next few weeks.

From suggestions runners have made, we are going back to the basics, back to the time when running first started. This is well before you ran with 20,000 of your nearest and dearest friends, starting in waves, and all the other logistics of the mega races not to mention what even passes now for your local fun run.

Start time for Full and Half Marathons are at 6:00 am on Sunday at the Library next to the fire station across from Kukui Mall. Please park in the back of the Kukui Mall lot where there will be a porta-potty. All acitivities will be at Ocean's restaurant for before and after the runs including the massages.

Online registration closes at 11:59 pm on Monday January 10. Mail-in/FAX registration must be received by Monday January 10.

Packet pick up: will be from noon to 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday January 14 and 15 at Kihei Sporting Goods, 1993 S Kihei Road, Space 7, Kihei 96753. It is on the ground floor of the Island Surf Building on the south end across from Kalama Park which is near the start/finish line. If you cannot make either of these times for packet pick up (someone else can pick up your packet for you) please let us know so alternate arrangements can be made. There will be no packet pick up on race morning.

Aid Stations and Toilets: What this means is you are going to be responsible for your own fluids, gels, and anything else you want to consume between the start and finish. There will be no "official" aid stations. No Port-a-Potties on the side of the road. More on aid stations and toilets later but the main thrust is if you want it, you will be responsible for either carrying it or getting it from friends and/or family along the way. A map of the courses will be given to each runner showing public parks where water and toilets are available (generally open by 7 am) but some are further off the course than others.

Timing & Course Data: There will be no chip timing but we will keep track of your time at the finish to slot you into 5 year age groups. There will be no course control with barricades or cones or cops or volunteers to stop traffic and guide you along the way. You will need to follow the common rules of running just like you do in a group run or on your daily runs.

Start/Finish is at the Library next to Kalama Park and across from Kukui Mall. The marathon course will head North on S Kihei Road to Sugar Beach area (approx 4.3 miles). You will then turn around and head back South to start/finish area, continue South along S Kihei Road up to Wailea Alanui, connect to Makena Alanui to Ahihi Bay (approx mile 17) to turn around and head back to the Finish. The half marathon heads south along S Kihei Road to Wailea Alanui to Makena Alanui to just before the Makena Beach Resort to turn around and head back to the Finish. You should use a GPS type timing system for knowing where you are on the course.

Entry Restrictions: The fields will be limited for each event. Most likely no more than 100 each but could be less. We reserve the right to limit not only the size of the field but by gender, age groups, and location of entrants from throughout the world. There will be a time limit for completion most likely set by age and/or gender with more to come on that aspect. However, most likely the top limit for the marathon will not be longer than 7 hours and for the half marathon 4 hours.

Registration: Fee for either event is US$55 by on line and credit card or $50 for mail in with check. For that you will get a tech style finisher shirt and a medal. As we flesh out the events, we plan to add some other benefits that will be posted on the website. Please go to the Registration tab for all the details. All checks have to be in US dollars. We reserve the right to close registration at any date and/or change the fee structure.

Age Limits: All runners in either event, must be at least 18 years of age by race day.

More data will be posted on the site as we complete the items. This is an event for the experienced runner. You must be able to run/walk for hours in a self sufficient mode and have done a number of marathons or half marathons to be comfortable undertaking an endurance event of this nature, especially one in the tropics where the only unknown is exactly how hot it is going to be.

As always, please email Jerry@mauiroadrunners.com if you have any questions. Mahalo and looking forward to seeing you on January 16, 2011.
